Opening Reception: Saturday, May 19, 6:30-8 pm Exhibition on view: May 20 – July 8, 2012 UCSB MFA 2012 Exhibition: Headgear for Tony presents fresh talent from the Fine Art graduate department at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). The work of MFA recipients Tim Brown, Jared Flores, Emily Halbardier, Bessie Kunath, Jae Hee Lee, Nick Loewen, Ruby Osorio, Rimas Simaitis, and Van Tran is shaped by their experiences in the UCSB Department of Art’s graduate program, which emphasizes interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to art-making and the utilization of campus resources. The artists also engage in programs outside the required MFA curriculum to both expand their interdisciplinary scope and supplement their own artistic focus, interests, and goals. Co-organized by Laurel Beckman, Professor and Graduate Program Chair, Department of Art at UCSB, and Karla Blancas, CAF Curatorial Associate, the exhibition presents the artists’ unique perspectives composed of diverse mediums and viewpoints. Bloom Projects: Susanna Vapnek, Sundowner Inspired by the 2008 Tea Fire, Susanna Vapnek’s paintings tap into the intensity of shared community experience with emotive, apocalyptic representations of the Santa Barbara fire season. The exhibition is titled Sundowner, a reference to dangerous and uncontrollable hot winds that descend from the mountains to the sea fueling fires into raging infernos. Her Southern California landscapes expose the fluidity, energy, and dark side of a region often viewed as an eternal paradise. New York-based Susanna Vapnek received a BA, Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH, and a MFA, School of Visual Arts, New York, NY. A painter and collage artist, as well as documentary filmmaker, Vapnek spends time in Santa Barbara, CA.
